Eleni Kelakos is motivational speaker who makes use of her talents as a singer-songwriter in her presentations. I got to know her a bit years ago when she was a traveling minstrel, before she added the motivational work. She called me a luminous soul, but I thought the term fit her much better than it fit me.
I thought of her as I was mulling over my blog post for today. Since I won’t make it to church this morning for the regular worship service, I wanted to do something reverential, and my mind went to the people of Doctors Without Borders who were killed and wounded in the airstrike yesterday in Kunduz, Afghanistan. I wanted to honor the doctors, nurses, and other volunteers who put themselves in harm’s way because, well, they say to themselves: “If I don’t do it, who will?”
That’s when I thought of Eleni and her song Everyday Healers. She told me that she wrote it out of her deep respect for the people who cared for her mother as she was dying of Alzheimer’s. So for my worship this morning I’ll listen to her song and ask you to listen as well.
